September is National Yoga Awareness Month. This month we will share some of health benefits of yoga and how yoga can inspire a healthy lifestyle. If you’re interested in adding yoga to your fitness routine you’ve come to the right place.
Yoga combines physical poses, controlled breathing, meditation or relaxation focusing on the mind and body.
Practicing yoga can help with body awareness, flexibility, strength, mobility, and balance. It also requires you to shift into a more relaxed state, which can help decrease stress, increase focus, and promote a stronger connection with yourself
Our top yoga tips:
1. Find a class/program that works for you
Yoga doesn’t have to be intimidating. Start with a class with certified instructions that are there to answer your questions and provide guidance to get accustomed to the poses.
2. Use a non-slip mat
Go through your poses confidently without slipping with a non-slip mat. It’s also important to have padding for your joints, wrist, and knees.
3. Modify poses for your needs
In the beginning you may not be able to complete each pose. Modify the pose to your comfort level to make things easier on your body.
4. Stay Hydrated and eat light before your workout
Drink 16-20 ounces of water before and after your workout to support your body during your yoga workout. Eat a light snack such as nuts, fruits or a healthy sports bar 2–3 hours before class to fuel your workout but avoid discomfort.
